guide to exploring machu picchu
Choosing the right time to visit Machu Picchu is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience. We recommend planning your trip between April and October when the region enjoys dry weather and sunny days.

During this time, temperatures range from 20°C during the day to 10°C at night, creating ideal conditions for exploring the sanctuary without worrying about sudden rain or weather changes. This season also offers clearer views, allowing you to fully appreciate the majesty of the valley. By avoiding the rainy season, you’ll enhance your experience of Machu Picchu, making it more unforgettable and inspiring.

Transportation

There are several ways to reach the iconic Machu Picchu, each catering to different adventure preferences. The fastest and most comfortable option is by train, with daily departures from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, the town closest to the citadel.

This three-hour journey offers varying levels of service and amenities, allowing you to enjoy the scenic landscape en route to Machu Picchu. If you prefer to acclimatize before the final leg of the trip, you can stay in Aguas Calientes, where accommodations and a craft market await.

The Altitude Isn’t Too Bad

Machu Picchu is situated at 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level, which is lower than the city of Cusco at 3,400 meters (11,152 feet). If you’ve already spent time acclimatizing in Cusco, you likely won’t experience altitude sickness at Machu Picchu. However, if you plan to hike Machu Picchu Mountain, keep in mind that the altitude at the summit exceeds 3,000 meters (9,842 feet), and Huayna Picchu rises to about 2,700 meters (8,858 feet), where you may start to feel the effects of the altitude, especially during physical activity. If you’re concerned about altitude, take it slow, drink plenty of water, and consider remedies like coca tea or soroche pills, which can help alleviate symptoms. Be sure to consult with your doctor about any altitude concerns before your trip.

Visit Machu Picchu in the Morning

Under new regulations, visitors can enter Machu Picchu from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or from 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., depending on the time slot chosen when purchasing tickets. If you have a morning ticket, it’s unlikely that you will be asked to leave exactly at noon. During my visit, I entered at 6:30 a.m. and stayed until almost 4:00 p.m. without encountering any issues. While these regulations may change in the future, it may take some time before they are strictly enforced.
